[mahogany box] My mahogany box is featured on Fine Wood Working.com (The Editors Mailbox 'Photo Essay: Building an Elegant Mahogany Box' by Kirsten Lie-Nielsen) Books and magazines published by The Taunton Press have been my textbooks for years, having learned about sharpening tools to finishing, so I'm really excited about being featured. The makings of hako, (1)~(12), from [ workshop diary ].

Kauri Box/ 箱 (1)
	I first made this box along with 2 other boxes for a local gallery's exhibition. Each box has its own character. The idea for this Kauri box came from the Japanese architecture style called 'SUKIYA'. If you'd like to see the other boxes, please click on 'box' above. (photo: splines - these go between each frame) この箱は、他の２つの箱と一緒に、オークランド市街にあるギャラリーの展示会に出品するために製作しました。それぞれの箱に個性をもたせるように努めましたが、 特にこの箱は、私の好きな数奇屋をイメージして作りました。今回は、海外からの注文を受けての製作となります。 (左写真　少しだけ表しになる雇い実)

Kauri Box/ 箱 (2)
	I use these hand planes for sizing kauri. The longest plane (about 55cm long) was given to me by my wife's uncle, a retired carpenter, and is my favourite plane. カウリの加工には、これらのかんなを使います。 １番長いかんな（だいたい　長さ55cm)は、妻のおじさんで引退した大工さんからいただいたもので、愛用しています。 日本のかんなとの違いは、押してかけること、鋳鉄製なのでけっこう重い、といったところでしょうか。

I gradually glued up each frame and the splines from the center piece. It is always satisfying - and a relief! - when this difficult part is finally completed. 中央から、フレームを順に接着してゆきます。 むずかしい部分が何事もなく終わり、ほっとしたところです。 （写真内右のふたの接着も、うまくできました。）

I used pieces of cherry veneer as corner reinforcements. Carefully prepared timber shows continuous grain lines. 桜のベニアを、角の補強材として使用しました。 細心の注意を払って製材したおかげで、木目が通って見えるようにできました。

	I chose maple for the sliding tray's frame. These parts are made from one piece of timber for grain consistency. トレイにはメイプルを選びました。 木目をそろえるために、ひとつの板からこれらのパーツをつくります。

	I used pieces of mahogany as corner reinforcements. Depending on the direction of the light, interesting patterns show up on the sapele panels. 角の補強には、マホガニーを選びました。 光の角度によって、サペレのパネルに、おもしろい木目が浮かび上がります。

	I have applied 5 coats of shellac. After fitting the feet and tray slider, I will wax the completed box. セラックを、５層塗り終わったところ。 脚と、トレイスライダーを取り付けた後に、ワックスで仕上げます。

	Completed Kauri Box/ 箱 (12)
	After attaching the feet and tray sliders, I applied wax with very fine(0000) steel wool. And finally the box is completed! One box is going overseas. 脚と、トレイスライダーを取り付けた後、ワックスをかけます。ワックスがけには、目の細かいスチールウールをつかいます。これでやっと完成です！１つの箱は海外へ送るので、郵送の準備を始めます。
